VIEWING MORNING SUNLIGHT AS A PRIMARY LEVER FOR HEALTH •
-
The basic Huberman Lab circadian rhythm setting protocol: go outside and face the sun. You don’t have to see it cross the horizon if it’s already risen.
On clear days, 5-8min viewing should suffice.
With partial cloud cover: 10-20min.
Overcast days: 20-30min.
-
How soon after waking? ASAP.
What if the sun isn’t out yet? You’ll have to wait. (Unless you have powers I am not aware of).
What if there is no sunlight where I live? There is always sunlight, and it’s brighter than even bright indoor lights.
Sunglasses OK? Not while setting circadian rhythm. They’re perfectly fine to wear at other times if you need them.
Can I view sunlight for circadian rhythm setting through a window? Alas, it’s not the same. Unless it’s sun coming in directly through an open window.
Glasses and contacts? Are fine.
Do I need to stare at the sun? No. Please don’t ever stare at the sun! Blink as needed. Protect your eyes.

To learn more about the use of light, including sunlight and redlight for circadian and other aspects of health, go to hubermanlab.com and put “light and health” into the search function... it will take you to the specific timestamps of interest. We also have a zero cost newsletter on this topic at that site. (See Newletter in menu tab and enter email; we don’t share it).
