Today, we want to highlight our friend Mary J. Blige’s iconic album ‘What’s the 411?’ turning 30 years old on Thursday. This album gave us hits such as ‘Real Love’ and ‘You Remind Me’, the latter of which Misa Hylton ( @misahylton ) styled Blige for.
“We were inspired by Mary’s natural style and elevating it, making it fun and interesting. We didn't know the same things back then, the way that fashion styling is now,” Misa once told @Nylon. “Creating a music video and looks for a music video is very different now than it was at that time. Everything that we did was organic and true to who she was and what she liked, and then adding my stylist edit.”
The core values of the Misa Hylton Fashion Academy are Community, Creativity, Integrity, Personal Growth, Experience, Collaboration, Pride and Passion. These are themes that are not only apparent from this one moment in her career, but throughout her career.
People are recreating the looks that Misa constructed 30 years later which speaks to her creativity and innovative nature. Through her various personal and professional experiences, Misa has developed a sense of pride in knowing that she’s created a space for the next wave of fashion stylists to master the fundamentals of their passions.
Ten years in, Misa has built her own community of fashion creatives with the Misa Hylton Fashion Academy with which she continues to build upon her legacy through various collaborative projects.
