i’ve known janusz kaminski for 25 years and consider him one of the most incredible cinematographers alive. i’ve been involved with 4 oscar nominated films with him (saving private ryan won). he has a fearless approach. whether it’s a steven film or a commercial, i lit 15 films with him as a gaffer, he is a true no holds barred filmmaker. i’m so proud of him and his work on ‘west side story’. janusz and steven found the balance and beauty to tell this musical. a huge budget doesn’t give a DP taste, very often the opposite. as simple and basic as it may sound, janusz’ goal starts and ends with the story. the emotional base. he has been thru hardship and the images and emotion audiences feel have changed cinema forever. #daviddevlin #januszkaminski #stevenspielberg #westsidestory #cinematography #fearless #icon #truefriend
