2004 Women’s March
In 2004, leading reproductive rights organization held a massive protest of the erosion of reproductive rights. Among the approximately 1.3 million who participated was a much more sizeable group of people of color. The March signaled ongoing changes to the priorities and identity of the movement for legal abortion. Groups like the SisterSong Women of Color Reproductive Justice Collective (founded in 1997) not only spotlighted the relationship between racial and reproductive justice; reproductive justice organizers also fought for stronger protections of the right to vote, better health care for low-income Americans, equality and health-care access for LGBTIQ individuals, and protections for parents and children.
