Do you know why we need sharks in order for coral reefs to be healthy?
The mere presence of sharks around corals has been shown to limit predation on herbivorous fish by mesopredators such as jacks and groupers. Herbivorous fish clean algae, other plants, and sometimes even debris off corals, which otherwise could overgrow and/or “suffocate” the coral.
Sharks also move important nutrients between shallow water and deeper reefs.
Every animal species has an important role to play in the health of an ecosystem but some are more crucial than others, we refer to those species, like sharks, as a keystone species, critical to a healthy and sustainable ecosystem which many other species rely on.
Help protect coral reefs by helping to protect sharks and other marine life and halting overfishing and pollution wherever you can.

World reef day is June 1st.
Some ideas for ways to help to celebrate and support healthy reefs.
-Reef or beach clean up
-Pledging to stop using certain harmful chemicals
-Pledging to not support destructive fishing
-Writing to companies who pollute waterways, overfish, or use methods tats are extremely devastating to corals such as bottom trawling.
-Using rashguards and reef safe sunscreens only.
