Celia Birtwell found that attitude underscored the vision of the 1960s era. “I met many extraordinary people then, notably David Hockney, but also other fine artists, musicians, designers,” Celia said. But in those days, money was not the driving force of our ambition. We lived in rented flats, ate what we could afford, but most importantly had no pressure from outside to follow a market that was driven by others,” Celia explained. “We were free to design, present, and live-or-die by the public’s reception,” she continued. “It was a wonderful time that will never return, and I’m so grateful to have been able to be a part of it all. It’s easy to look back with rose-tinted spectacles, but it was a very unusual part of late post-war history.” The work of Ossie Clark will be on display with that of Celia Birtwell in Italy this autumn in Prato Textile Museum and then in Milan with Fondazione Sozzani.
