Like millions around the globe, I spent last weekend glued to my screen- partly to cheer on Argentina during the World Cup, but also to keep a close eye on a key decision unfolding for our planet. As Messi played his heart out, tensions between countries at the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity were escalating. Finally, at around 3 am Eastern on Monday morning, a Biodiversity Framework was established to set the world on the path towards protecting 30% of our land and seas by 2030. Unfortunately, many of the specifics surrounding what constitutes a protected area remain rather vague, leaving a little too much room for loose interpretations. But there is still reason to celebrate. Almost 200 nations agreed to reach target points that will ultimately give our planet’s disappearing wildlife a fighting chance – and us along with it. Now it is up to all of us to ensure these promises are fulfilled by holding each other accountable and empowering everyone to participate in the global solution.
