The End of Roe and the Start of a New Era
In June 2022, the Supreme Court reversed Roe, holding that the only rights we have were those recognized as fundamental in the late nineteenth century, at a time when women could not vote or practice law, and when equality for people of color was a distant dream. But the Court’s decision hardly put an end to the fight for abortion rights. Women are fighting in state legislatures and litigating in state courts; donating to abortion funds, launching mobile clinics, getting abortion on the ballot, and providing support networks for people who have to protect their digital privacy or cross state lines or order pills online. It took more than a decade for women to secure a constitutional right abortion before Roe. If it takes twice as long, no one is giving up now.
