The Chelsea Hotel is an ICONIC institution. Everyone who paved the path for me to live as an artist in New York City made their way through their doors (and some are still living there). The hotel was unique; it was a bit run down, with no frills, and situated in a perfectly derelict neighborhood. These individual elements attracted and then housed all the brilliant creative freaks.
When I moved to NY in the 90s and started my photography path, I often used the Chelsea Hotel as a photo location. They were always generous with young talent and would rent me rooms cheaply. It felt incredibly cool to be there, and I liked to align myself with its history.
The hotel saw many revisions in the past 15 years; my least favorite was the Ramada Hotel version, devoid of the charm and character that drew us all in. Its new iteration is full-on style; its new owners are pros in hip hotels.
@taticotliar from @buffalozine asked if I wanted to create a story with her using the hotel as the location (the entire magazine was shot at the hotel). I felt inspired. In the 60s and 70s, the tenants were a hodgepodge of people all running around, raising each other—a rare collection of misfits. We wanted our story to represent that particular aspect focusing on the diversity and oddity that only this hotel conveyed. @josephcharlesviola found us an incredible array of people to represent that ethos.
All the chaos we could have wanted in two full days made for a great shoot.
