one thing C told me many years ago about the difference between Trinidadians and other people is that, in their mind, the thought is always ‘what can we do for you’ rather than ‘what can you do for me’ - a residing truth. I always thought I would go back after I finished my thesis. That was 2014, and I used to look at flights all 2015 and 2016 to compare prices with my bank account, waiting for the scales to tip. Then so much time passed, that I didn’t realize my circumstance had changed, that I could go. It took emergency to make me understand. Like a bop on the head. So here I was 8 years later, with people I’ve loved, who I love still, and already new friends in just a few days. That’s how Trinidad is if you step into the watercourse way. Fully yin + yang. One of the world’s best kept secrets. One of the only places left with people so true, with food so steeped in culture, with open doors and kind hearts. Now that I realized the door is open, I’ll step through again and again. But I wanted to share a little taste of moments I’ve felt an overwhelming sense of love and memory in.
