Illegal Wildlife Trade is in the top 3 crimes globally along with human trafficking and drugs.
For wildlife, it means that no species is safe anymore because at any given moment any of them might become in demand to meet the needs of markets in some Asian and African countries.
Pangolins have unfortunately become the most trafficked animals in the world in this regard. These gentle creatures are considered to be a delicacy in some parts of Asia, and their scales are used for Traditional Medicines with the claim that scales help cure multiple health conditions.
But just like in the case of rhino horns, there is no scientific evidence such statements can be based upon, since pangolin scales are keratin, the same protein that constitutes rhino horn, and human nails and hair.
Recently a few pangolins have been saved from the illegal trade and released to a safe place under strict supervision and protection. One of The Black Mamba Sergeants has been busy monitoring one of the pangolins and helping measure its weight to see if it eats well and check its general condition.
Stay tuned for more updates!
We would like to say a warm thank you to everybody who is involved in saving these gentle creatures: @tfafrica @umoyakhulula , @provet_animal_hospital and @rettet.das.nashorn
Special thanks to Prof. @prof_ray_j for the inspiration.
