What are AHAs and BHAs? I’m sure many of you have heard or seen those two acronyms, but have no idea what they mean. So let’s break it down! AHAs, or Alpha Hydroxy Acids, are chemical exfoliants that remove dead skin cells off the surface of the skin, revealing newer skin over time. Think of it as “shedding older skin.” These are great for lessening hyperpigmentation, evening skin tone & texture, and reducing fine lines. The most common kinds of AHAs include Glycolic Acid, Lactic Acid, and Mandelic Acid. Glycolic Acid is the strongest of the group, and Mandelic Acid is the gentlest. BHAs, or Beta Hydroxy Acids, penetrate deep into the pore of the skin to dissolve blackheads, sebum, and dead skin cells. They’re also great for reducing acne, clogged pores, and whiteheads. By using BHAs, they help to keep your pores clear, ultimately making them appear smaller. Salicylic Acid is a common BHA to use. If you’re using either of these kinds of products, make sure that you are consistently applying SPF as they make your skin more sensitive to the sun! Also make sure to patch test either of these products as it may cause irritated skin.
