She means just so so so much to everyone who loves her but us black women who grew up watching her, grew up with her... it’s something I can’t explain. Watching her win, watching her be her full powerful self in the face of the worst racism and misogynoir, watching her be a force on court and gentle, loving and a girl’s girl off court. She was fiercely competitive but also for the most part extremely gracious and a favourite among new or younger players. She took up space in a world that was designed to keep her out and made us feel safe to do the same no matter the institutionalised or otherwise barriers set up for us to fail. It was about so much more than being amazing at tennis and becoming the very greatest of all time in a sport that was previously so exclusionary, white, “elite”. Thank you @serenawilliams.
