This is Psilo cybe allenii it is an “active” white rot saprotrophic mushroom that grows commonly in wood chip beds and landscaping on the West Coast of North America, especially California. They tend to fruit when conditions are relatively wet and cool in irrigated wood chip beds that are regularly refreshed. This species is closely related to cyanescens and azurescens, which look similar and also grow in wood chip habitat. There are some morphological differences, but more often than not you need to do microscopy and DNA barcoding to be 100% certain of species. These mushrooms do have toxic look alikes, so please familiarize yourself with the features of Inocybe, Conocybe, and Galerina mushrooms. Never eat anything you yourself can’t positively ID.
