When I started centering Haitian food in my work many years ago, I never imagined that it would ever bring me to where I am now. There’s a lot happening in my life but it was imperative that I made time and space to be able to cook this dinner. Family means so much to me personally and to us as a culture. It’s an honor to break bread with the Basquiat family and to celebrate one of the most important artists of my/our lifetime. Tickets are on sale (link in bio) for the first of 3 Family Dinner’s celebrating and supporting the work of Jean-Michel Basquiat at the King Pleasure Exhibit. Dinner includes a tour of the exhibit and the opportunity to enjoy a 4 course meal celebrating the cultures of JMB, seated in between two of his very large pieces of artwork (!!!!!) The partnering organization for the first Family Dinner is Food With Fam (@food_withfam) a volunteer-led mutual aid org in NYC that started during the pandemic & believes in repurposing resources to help build community. On Saturday, September 24th at 11 AM, Food With Fam will be organizing a food distribution program at the Gowanus Community Center (420 Baltic St. Brooklyn, NY, NY) on behalf of the Estate of Jean-Michel Basquiat. The distribution will provide bags of free locally-grown produce and recipe cards inspired by my menu creations for up to 300 families in the Gowanus Houses community. These distributions provide families of four with high quality ingredients for at least one week. Volunteers are welcome!
