"Me, Flower and Mr. DOB is a drawing made especially for The Drawing Center by the one and only Takashi Murakami. I was lucky enough to work with Mr. Murakami way back in 2002 in a show at MoMA called “Drawing Now: Eight Propositions” but an Instagram post by the artist reveals a different reason for such generous participation in our fundraising event. Round about the time of the MoMA show, Mr. Murakami also participated in a group show at TDC, but what the artist remembers most vividly is driving around Brooklyn in an old Caddy piloted by James Elaine, an artist and the curator at TDC at the time. This work is so RARE. As Murakami explains on Instagram, he doesn’t make many freehand drawings. This one is special for its subject matter too; it’s a self portrait, with the artist posing with his most popular characters/motifs. Welcome back to TDC, Takashi! The Cadillac is long gone but we are still thrilled to exhibit one of your drawings!" @lhoptman The Drawing Center's Executive Director This work by @takashipom and more than 80 others will be available to bid on as part of our Benefit Auction. Online bidding is now live, and you can buy tickets to the party on Sept 28th celebrating all the artists who donated this year. Learn more via the link in our bio!
