✨FEDERICA ANGELUCCI’s FINDINGS And for her third finding of the month, my guest Federica Angelucci, co director of @stevenson_za gallery in Cape Town, proposes to discover the work of Themhinkosi Hlatshwayo (@thembinkosih15) : “Born in Soweto in the 1990s, Thembinkosi grew up in a home that had a tavern. Like many other working-class families in townships, his parents established the tavern as the primary source of income. The nights of the young Hlatshwayo would often be interrupted by shouts and fights of drunk clients. His childhood marked by the violence, the deaths, and stigma of the tavern. It is through photography that Thembinkosi begins an inward journey and talks about his experiences. The result is "Slaghuis" ("slaughterhouse" or butchery in Afrikaans), a powerful work in which the photographer tries to come to terms with these experiences. In his pictures, the childlike perspective evokes memories of the past and the fragmented figures embody nightmares and trauma. It’s an intimate, brave and moving work.”
