The worst part about owning a bully breed has nothing to do with the breed itself— it’s the constant put-downs from other people who claim to be “dog lovers”. 🖤 I started training Baloo the moment he left the shelter. I was determined to have a highly-trained bully breed from the start, because I was deathly afraid of being judged by other people because of his breed. Pitbulls and other negatively stereotyped bully breeds have to ALWAYS be on their best behavior, because they don’t get second chances like other breeds. They have one chance to prove themselves to people. Owning a bully breed means going above and beyond to prove that you have complete control over your dog. And even on their best behavior, they draw negative attention. If a “family breed” barks at a stranger, they’re excited to say hi. If a bully breed does it, they’re aggressive. The worst comments come from people with their own dogs. People who have their own babies at home that they love and cherish and would do anything for. It amazes me that they’re able to tell me, a fellow dog owner, that my dog should be “euthanized for my safety” when they have their own dog at home. What if I said that about the dog you loved? My dog’s breed doesn’t make him any less of a dog. These dogs are losing their lives daily due to sensationalized stereotypes and most are never given the chance to prove themselves the way Baloo has. I am incredibly lucky to be here, spreading awareness, and showing the world what it means to be an advocate for this breed and breeds like it. Baloo was a rescue. He was an adult when I rescued him. He is 100% American Pitbull Terrier according to his Embark DNA Test. And he is capable of doing all of this and so much more. He’s not “going to snap one day”. He’s not a “danger to society”. He’s not an “accident waiting to happen”. He’s just a dog.
