Through the thick tendrils of fog rising to meet the treetops, I watched a pair of brown bears make their way across the river. Their silhouettes were dwarfed by the towering pines growing along the banks and mountain slopes. Somewhere just beyond the sea of green were intersecting roads leading into sleepy towns. Many of the people who live in areas like this grew up traipsing through mossy forests and have a deep appreciation for British Columbia’s dense wilds. However, our love for the natural world is constantly at odds with our drive to develop and consume. Bears require massive territories with ample food in order to sustain their populations and each day we lose more and more of our forests. This image reminds me that there is plenty of space for every one of us - bears and humans alike - on this big beautiful planet; but only if we learn to allow our green and wild places to thrive.
