Loy Bowlin heard Glen Campbell's song “Rhinestone Cowboy” in the late 1970s, at a time when his loneliness was particularly acute; it sparked an idea. The idea was to adopt the persona of said Cowboy, starting with his appearance. He began to make the necessary attire, sewing rhinestones onto pants, coats, hats, boots, and his glasses. Bowlin's looks drew attention and people gathered around to listen to his stories and jokes.
He was so pleased with the results that he made an outfit for each day of the week, spending what he estimated to be roughly 250 hours covering each suit with upwards of 1,500 sparkling stones.
Loy Bowlin, untitled, c. 1975–1985; fabric, thread, rhinestones, and mixed media; 48 x 29 x 7 in. John Michael Kohler Arts Center Collection, gift of Kohler Foundation Inc. in partnership with Katy Emde and Bill Bowlin.
