MEXICANO AMERICANO para @i_d The Earthrise Issue Growing up in a family deeply entrenched within the chicano movement I was constantly reminded in my household, my community and by my elders about this concept of "gente" and "raza" and the solidarity behind those terms. This dichotomy of preservation of culture coinciding with the creation of a new. This common goal we share, burdensome and beautiful. As I have grown older these notions while still valid are much more complex. We all are products of our environments and these identities are incredibly personal and nuanced. What we hold as who we are is a reflection of the spaces, terrain, language and practices we hold dear. I never thought in a million years that I would be able to be in community with gente that carry so many different stories all equally important. The geography of Aztlan always felt so mythical to me. The vision and work that Dorian, Ricardo and Carlos create with In the Park is so important in documenting this beauty and the intentionality is felt in the process and the product. Likewise the Willy team is rooted in the same mission. The people highighted in this all come from different cities, different generations, express gender, sexuality and culture in their own way and all hold so much strength. America means nothing to me, the border is a divisive construct of colonialism.
