🌊 New column alert 🌊 I’ve started a new regular column series under the Politics tab @bricks_magazine lovingly called ‘Community Curators’ ! Here, every 2 weeks (ish), I’ll be amplifying a different grassroots community organisation/initiative, and discussing the need for their work within our society and the current socio-political climate. Because: “Community is no longer just our next-door neighbours - it's also the people we connect with around the world through shared identities, values and interests.” The first column in this series spotlighted @notokclub and discussed the fact that PoCs and queer people often feel unwelcome in emo/alt spaces, despite their huge contributions and the fact that queerness is inherently punk! I speak with the amazing @yanaboth on how they started this night to create a safe space for emo/alt queer PoCs! 🖤⛓ Today, the second piece in the series amplifies the work of @solidaritytapes. Founded and run by musicians – and brothers – Josh, Toby, and Aidan Evans-Jesra, Solidarity Tapes “is a cultural project aiming to make explicit links between music and activism”. At a time when migrant and refugee rights are especially precarious in the UK, LGBTQIA+ rights are being rolled back in countries across the world, and climate change is leading to catastrophic disasters, extinctions, and an uncertain future, it’s more important than ever that we come together to act in solidarity with one another. I speak with the team behind Solidarity Tapes on how they’re fostering community and driving change. I’m really proud of this column that nobody asked for - but tbh that’s kind of the point! It’s so important that we recognise the incredible work that’s happening all around us - and that hardly ever gets the attention that it deserves.
