TOKALA for @voguemagazine: Atlakatl Ce Tochtli Orozco Tokala is a photo & video series highlighting the intersectionality of climate and social justice centering BIPOC youth organizers and the stories of the regions/communities they are fighting for. Climate change and climate activism have been falsely portrayed by the main stream media for years. Climate issues aren't a thing of the future these fights have been taking place for centuries. When a pipeline is being built on indigenous land, that's a climate issue. When folks in POC neighborhoods don't have access to healthy sustainable food, that's a climate issue. When entire black and brown communities are predisposed to asthma and other developmental illness, you guessed it that's a climate issue. Further more coverage of these issues tends to not only be bleak but extractive often times capturing video, photo and text without fully representing those doing the work. This series is about showing organizers who were born into this work in their strength, building community and documenting their stories through their lens and giving them the spotlight they never seek but rightfully deserve. Ce Tochtli does a billion things like everyone you'll see in this series but this story is about his work in El Sereno and the displacement of people on the East Side by Cal Trans. Tochtli has not only been on the front lines to fight against the state but also works locally in El Sereno with the El Sereno Land Trust to provide generative solutions in community. @chrisjallaire does a much better and more thorough job of telling this story which you can find the link to in my bio.
