TOKALA for Vogue: Danielle "Abalone Eyes" Rey Frank 🐚 Danielle is 18, a water protector from Hoopa, CA. Danielle has been committed to preserving the health of the Trinity and Klamath Rivers on the Hoopa Reservation, attending actions since the age of 7. Her story is about how the health of the river directly effects the health of her community both mentally and physically. “We are a piece of the land, and it’s a piece of us; When it’s hurting, we’re hurting.” Rising water temperatures and invasive growth of algae in the Trinity River has lowered water supplies, reduced the salmon population and made harvesting willow sticks used for regalia difficult. All a direct cause of the more than 18 man made dams and reservoirs in the area. Danielle and her community have successfully won a fight to begin removal of some of these dams, the largest removal in US history. Danielle is tough and resilient but that is not what defines her. More than that she is an empathetic and intelligent person who personifies the strength and beauty of the matriarchs who raised her.
