Here are the five elements I’m always listening for once we start rolling in one of my sessions. Don’t just record a bunch of takes then say “I think it’s in there”. Instead, get super deliberate about where you’re placing your attention and make sure that you’re definitely capturing not just what you need, but hunt for the vibrant gems that will truly take your song to another dimension. There’s a lot of nuance to any discussion about making music, and each of the five points mentioned here could easily be spun out into an extended YouTube video or PhD Thesis. My goal here isn’t to tall you there’s a right or wrong way to make a record, but rather to encourage you to think about how you’re using your own attention and focus when you’re on sessions.
