El Justo Juez de la Noche, The Just Judge of the Night The popular story is that he is a figure invented by the Spanish to control the indigenous population. He wears all black, ocassionally rides his horse through the villages at night, and where his head should be is a plume of black smoke. El Justo Juez however, may have much more ancient origins. The Popul Vuj mentions figures who claim to "own the night" just as the Justo Juez famously declares. They too patrol the darkness in search of bad souls to punish. Rather than a tormentor of the indigenous populations, he acts as a sort of protector.
