Magnum photographer Erich Hartmann was born in Munich, Germany, 100 years ago today. Hartmann’s style was enigmatic, unfinished and ambiguous. It was life in progress. He was never without a camera loaded with black-and-white film and a small box of extra rolls, which he used to capture what intrigued him. After escaping Nazi Germany with his family in 1938 for Albany, New York, Hartmann served in the US Army during the liberation of Europe. Towards the end of the war, Hartmann moved to New York City and began his photographic career as an assistant to a portrait photographer. The city remained his home for the rest of his life, where he documented the people, patterns and abstract images that fascinated him. On the occasion of the centennial of his birth, read more about Erich Hartmann and his work at the link in bio ✨
