In August of 2020 a lightning storm sparked The Woodward Fire in Point Reyes National Seashore. By October, the wildfire was finally 100% contained at just under 5,000 acres in size. According to the National Park Service, ecologists considered the Woodward Fire to be beneficial because it burned with high intensity in some places, and other places it burned lightly — in contrast with larger, hotter fires that consume everything in its path.
Yesterday Evan and I hiked the scorched but thriving trail for the first time since the fire, and it was wildly peaceful under a thick blanket of fog. With few more sounds than birds chirping, I took this handful of iPhone photos then tucked the technology away for the rest of the day, basking in the marvel of our resilient earth.
