How do you stay cozy on the longest night of the year? Tonight is the winter solstice - ka māuikiʻikiʻi o ka hoʻoilo. The solstice marks the longest pō (night) and first day of winter for many people in the Northern Hemisphere. Haleakalā National Park is close to the equator, so there isn’t as much of a change between day and night length through the year. However, the winter often brings more rainfall, leading to more extreme weather events and road closures across the Hawaiian Islands. To prepare for the winter, check the National Weather Service for updated weather forecasts and check out the Live Haleakalā Crater Webcam to see the weather in real time. NPS Photo
