If you had to guess where these images were taken, where would you think? This is not some tropical reef. These colorful gems live hidden beneath the chilly, green waters of the Salish Sea in British Columbia. The entire seascape is blooming with bouquets of painted anemones and purple ochre starfish clinging to patches of Coralline algae. A red Irish Lord (yes, that is its name), a peculiar little ray-finned fish of the northern Pacific, rests in a bed of plumose anemones. There are so many beautiful and important ecosystems tucked away in the most surprising little corners of our ocean– each one just as important to the health of our seas as the next. No matter how small or niche, each habitat, and all its wild inhabitants deserve our respect and protection.
