What are you made of? We asked Rare Impact Youth Ambassador @darlenelareina (she/her) to share a few words to continue the celebration for our Latine/Hispanic Community. Here's what she said: "I am made of my ancestors' wildest dreams. I am a living, breathing testament that we are not what mainstream society has labeled us as. My identity is not a stereotype, and it is my superpower. The way I roll my R's, wear sleek buns with big hoops, and eat pupusas with my hands are just some of the ways it all makes me, me. Though born in the States, my first language was Spanish. As I attended school, I was told by my peers and the adults in my life how "nice" it was that I didn't have an accent when I spoke English. At the time, I couldn't find the words as to why that felt so wrong. The older I become, the more I realize how much I miss that accent, how talking only to my Ma in Spanish is not enough, and how much incorporating who I am in all I do, is so important. So necessary. When in doubt, I tell myself and would also like to offer to you, 'Lean into yourself - because what's meant for you will come.' And to be clear, you don't have to speak Spanish to be Latinx/Latine. Hispanic means being colonized by Spain, thus speaking Spanish. So, although not all Latinx/Latine folks speak the same language, there is so much beauty in all the shapes, sizes, and shades that make up Latin America. That makes us, us. " ❤️
