This photo was taken on the day I discovered I had been spoofed. A criminal had registered a #gmail account using my full name and @google voice number and was impersonating me with some of my friends and trying to scam them. It was discombobulating and disorienting, but the criminal messed with the wrong person. On 2/23, the one-year anniversary of my last book, the issue was resolved.
I am Tanya Selvaratnam. I am the author of Assume Nothing (about intimate partner violence) and The Big Lie (about fertility awareness). I take difficult experiences and translate them into tools that I hope help others.
When life throws you lemons, make art.
Thank you, Lauren, for the photo, taken in my new home and with a present of @vanbrunt_whiskey from her, @cindileive and @mcooke21 to christen the place. Thank you @tiffanyshlain and @chrysi for your help. I love you all, and I’m grateful for my friends, colleagues, work, and community.
I learned a lot about what to do if you’ve been spoofed. I hope you never find yourself in this situation, but if you do, below are some steps. If it does happen to you, please know that you’ve done nothing wrong.
1) Change your password(s) immediately.
2) File a report with the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center https://www.ic3.gov.
3) File a report with the FTC https://www.identitytheft.gov/#/.
4) File a report with your state's Office of Consumer Protection.
5) Call 911 and say you’ve been identity thefted. I met with two police officers who gave me great advice.
