Congratulations to Diana Al-Hadid (@dianaalhadid) on the artist’s new permanent sculptural installation at Princeton University Art Museum (@princetonuniversityartmuseum).
Unveiled to the public today as part of the museum’s new building, The Ziggurat Splits the Sky (2025) draws inspiration from ancient Sumerian ziggurats – architectural forms from Mesopotamia featuring rectangular bases with steps leading to temple platforms. The monumental sculpture stands at nearly fifteen feet tall and forty feet wide, rising to a narrow peak with a small platform at the summit.
The work extends Al-Hadid’s examination of the historical frameworks and perspectives that continue to shape discourse on culture and materials today. With a practice spanning sculpture, wall reliefs, and works on paper, the artist weaves together enigmatic narratives that draw inspiration from both ancient and modern civilizations.
