My mom asked me if I wanted to pick the tomatoes from our garden that day, emphasizing how, “it’s fun...it you know, gets your mind off things.” And later that afternoon, just as the sun was starting to set, I went to our garden, colanders in hand, and began to pick. For me, the last few months have felt like sprinting through an ominous fog. Life has brought endless change and with it a feeling of endless swirl.
Maybe my mom knew this, as all moms do with their sixth sense.
She was right – it was therapeutic. But weirdly, it also inspired me to make this video. As I separated tomato from vine, casted in a spiderweb of shadows while the wind gently sung, I felt compelled to grab my camera. The moment felt effortless – everything was perfect as it was. That’s what this video is, an attempt at capturing the euphoria and the bliss I felt during that hour.
I often feel silly writing and expressing things like this with others, like all I did was pick some damn tomatoes. It’s a big reason why I haven’t shared everything I want to share or created the things that I want to create – because what do I offer in an already crowded sea?
But maybe that’s why this moment was so special – it wasn’t offering anything to the world. It was offering something for me. A moment to breathe in the air around me, to stand in the warmth of the sun and appreciate the simple task of picking tomatoes for my family. It was a moment for nobody other than myself to enjoy.
If you can, go pick some tomatoes. Maybe you’ll have a similar awakening. Or maybe you won’t. At worst, you’ll have some delicious tomatoes.
After all, it’s the end of summer.
