In the last few weeks I’ve had quite a few media requests to speak about climate on radio or TV news in relation to the heatwaves. Channel 5 news had me do a 15 minute interview and then only included less than 5 seconds of it and gave more time on the program to climate denying messages from viewers. BBC Radio Scotland messed me around q a bit and then when we finally finished our recording - where for once I had a long time to speak my mind and really talk about radical climate justice and resisting individualism - they came up with excuses as to why they can’t air it. Other interviews have been cancelled last minute. This is just the nature of the media - and tbh I wouldn’t mind if it meant they were actually covering climate properly - but the fact is that they aren’t. The climate crisis continually gets bumped. I’ve had producers tell me after an interview that “it should be put at 5 unless something big comes up”... THE CLIMATE CRISIS IS HUUUUGE. Urgh. And then the only coverage we do get is apocalyptic. We need to be talking about the good things we can do as well as the bad things that are happening. We need to show people the way out. So many solutions that cantee climate justice - like insulating and retrofitting homes - not only help tackle the climate crisis but they ALSO make safer homes for people that stay cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter! SO many solutions to the climate crisis actually could make a better world for so many of us IF we both decarbonise (reduce emissions to real 0) AND implement adaptation measures that centre justice. These actions could transform our world. Let’s organise, join movements and put on the pressure. We have a whole world to win. ✊🏾❤️
