I recently visited a burnt down forest, after a wild fire, trunks were solid and sturdy to touch, like seaside piers. Ash filled a trench where a stream had once flowed, turning it to clay. Heat and wind had transformed it into a silky slick, reflecting the sun amid the tangle of matt, black scorched plant detritus. It was wet to touch, and irresistible. I picked up my sketch book and began to document the surfaces and textures around me.
