You’re not alone. I find that even when immersed in a sea of giant redwoods, it can feel a bit overwhelming to isolate subjects amidst all those trees and ferns. When approaching a scene, I naturally see the world in a wide lens. When I finally got my dream lens this year - Sony Alpha G Master 12-24 F/2.8, it was a complete game changer. It allowed me to open up my creative process to compose images with super close foregrounds while emphasizing the usage of the natural distortion of my lens. I always encourage my students to detach from their tripod, free themselves to roll around on the ground (pls avoid the poison ivy) and look for interesting leading lines and foreground elements to fill the frame.
