Repost @johncafiero - The world lost Ronnie Spector today. To say she was a treasure would be an understatement. Despite the fact that she was a living legend, she was one of the coolest, most easy going, down to earth people you’d ever meet. I was a big fan and very familiar with her incredible body of work long before I would ever fathom meeting, let alone working with her. I hadn’t formally met Ronnie until the day she walked in the door to record a guest appearance I’d arranged for her to make, singing on the Misfits Project 1950 album. A session I would also be producing. Before she arrived, to be honest, I was nervous. This was Ronnie Spector after all. A larger than life pop culture icon. I wanted to give her the space and respect she deserved and warranted, let her do her thing and follow her lead. I made that clear when she arrived. Ronnie immediately assured me that she wanted my direction and that it was OK to tell her what to do. Respectfully, I sang parts to her that I heard in my head, how, when, and where, to place them within the song. She lit up... “Oh, you sing too!?” She liked what she heard, and actually treated me like a peer. My mind was blown. Ronnie would sing back what I’d sing to her, putting her inimitable stamp and sound on each line. And so, that’s how the session went. Piece by piece, part by part, I’d sing to Ronnie and she’s process it and sing it back. I was a smoker at the time, and so was Ronnie. We’d take smoke breaks together, just the two of us, and it was like talking to your cool Aunt who just happens to be a fixture in rock and roll history. She candidly shared stories, thoughts, and experiences that I would have been privileged to be a fly on the wall to hear her reminisce about, let alone be the first person in conversation with her. That day will forever be branded in my mind. When the session ended and we listened back to the end results, Ronnie was genuinely excited and paid me an amazing compliment... “You made me sound 16 again!” I’m so appreciative of the once in a lifetime experience I was afforded with you Ronnie. Your presence, influence and impact will outlive us all. #ronniespector #misfits #johncafiero
