Portrait of Diamanda Galás by Austin Young, 2022 repost @thediamandagalas THE GORGON: THE GARGOYLE
Gargoyles, Gorgons, all share the same etymological root, from the Sanskrit stem garj signifying guttural sounds. If we were to look for a classical myth to help us shed light on the demonic and creative powers unleashed through the throat, that would be the story of the monstrous birth occurring through the decapitation of the Medusa, the Gorgon. This "divine monster of grief," among all Greek mythological beings, is dearest to Diamanda Galas.
Luca Zanchi - Polyképhalos Nomos: A Song Of Many Heads
Galás carries Stanislavsky’s method of emotional truth to a logical extreme neither he nor Duse nor Lee Strasberg ever dreamed of. I have rarely heard such power of expression commanded by a single performer. ......If there’s anyone in our too-soon-for-judgment epoch closer than Diamanda Galás to being a modern “classic,” I don’t know who it is. She’s one of the most original artists musical culture has produced in the last 30 years.
