3 months ago I anxiously prepared for the opening of @queercircle
After 6 years of development we would finally open the doors to the community.
Much like the Gay Liberation Front in the 70’s and Women’s Liberation before them, I had held years of “Think-Ins” with artists, curators, writers and community organisers to discuss our experiences as Queer people. They were an opportunity for people who didn’t know each other to share, learn and connect; and to understand what QUEERCIRCLE should be.
Despite this, the nerves still set in. Had we understood what the community wanted and needed? Would we deliver a programme that truly sat at the intersection of arts, culture and social action?
As our first season comes to a close, I want to thank each every person who has come and shared space with us. Your response has been so generous, supportive and loving. Thank you for coming with your ideas, for taking up space and delivering for our community.
We are still learning but I’m proud of what we have collectively achieved, and excited for what’s to come.
