🇵🇠Happy FilAm History Month! Did you know that in 2021 the State of California officially declared October 25 Larry Itliong Day? This weekend and next week, members of the FilAm community are organizing festivities to celebrate the legacy of this important Filipino farm worker and labor rights movement leader.
🎥 Featured video is a clip from @jaycarlon’s dance film, Moving Through: BAGGAGE, created as part of a month-long series of dance and movement presented by #MetroArtPresents in collaboration with @pieterperformancespace.
The theatrical dance film by artist Jay Carlon celebrates origin stories and embodies the histories of arrivals and departures at @unionstationla and in our lives through his personal family story of migration from the Philippines.
Vintage suitcases are animated by Carlon and musician Alex Wand through the use of contact microphones, movement-responsive scoring and spoken audio, including a series of voice messages from a Carlon family interview. The voice excerpts retrace Jay’s family story as agricultural migrant workers on the Central Coast, and shed light on the Filipinx immigrants that landed in the region.
🔗 Tap the link in our bio to watch the full 18-minute film this weekend, then check your local calendars to see if there is a FilAm celebration happening this weekend near you.
