This past weekend I had one of my most emotionally inspiring visits yet as CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America. We hosted 63 family members who lost loved ones in the tragedy in Uvalde, Texas at the Texas Motor Speedway for this weekend’s nationally televised NASCAR race. This moment was about providing these resilient young people and families an experience of joy and affirmation of the support and community that surrounds them. They were immersed in VIP treatment meeting NASCAR drivers, Pro Football Hall of Famers Darrell Green and Drew Pearson, and experiencing a behind the scenes tour and exclusive suite viewing for the race. For many, it was their first time visiting a race and just to see their laughter and joy was incredibly powerful. I was honored to spend time and share a message of hope with the families, as well as sharing our broader story with national and local media. This experience was part of launching a longer-term commitment of Big Brothers Big Sisters serving the Uvalde community. I’m proud and excited to share that Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Texas will provide mentoring programs and collaborate with mental health partners, schools and other community leaders to serve kids and their families. Thank you to our local BBBS CEO Denise Barkhurst and your incredible team for the partnership on this amazing weekend and the longer-term commitment to inspire positive mentorship for families who need us most. I have said many times it takes a village to support our kids and communities and I’m so thankful to the many people and partners who joined us to make this experience possible. Of course, we never want any community to experience tragic moments like this in our world. The Uvalde community is strong, resilient and determined to honor the legacy of loved ones by building a better future.
