Youre not lifting weights and it shows. Are you always injured or have a nagging injury? Are you unable to hike long sections with a heavy pack? or are you always sore from your adventures and too tired to do anything else? You'd probably call me crazy when I tell you lifting weights can fix all of those (for the most part) We all know strength training can increase muscle tone, but what we tend to glaze over is how it helps our joints and ligaments when we lift with proper form, and full range of motion for the individual. There are ways we can even incorporate lifting so those nagging injuries will go away and get stronger over time. Lifting weights especially in the rep ranges of 10+ help with muscle endurance. I usually have clients who are primarily outside utilize higher rep schemes as we work together, and even do some of their training with a ruck, or their backpacking pack, so not only are they used to it, they are set up better for success long term and dont have to learn how their pack feels and where it rubs. The last one is tricky, but I hear it a lot. You're always sore from skiing, hiking, biking, that you never want to go to a gym because you're already working out. While what you are doing is exercise, it is not doing what you think. Seasonal sports help one another, but really it is strength training that ties it all together and keeps you body balanced for everything year round. A lot is leg based, but that doesn't mean you need to forget about your upper body. And only focusing on specific sports, can lead to injury in other areas of your life. If I spent all summer mountain biking and downhill mountain biking, I would develop more strength in my right leg, and hamstrings because that is what moves my bike the most, which would cause my hips to uneven in strength. Everything is connected, and its perfectly normal to have imbalances and differences in strength from each side of your body. But why make them worse, when we could strengthen everything together.
