Herculaneum was a small seaside town popular with the Roman elite, and is a smaller, easier day trip than Pompeii. It was buried by thick mud and volcanic particles from the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79, which preserved many of their stunning frescos, art, sculpture, mosaic tile, stone houses and streets almost to perfection! It’s an extraordinary place to visit. The detail and beauty is breathtaking!! Naples is a short drive away and also has some gorgeous gems (and pizza!)
