According to InvisibleDisabilityProject.org, an "invisible" disability is any physical, mental, or emotional impairment that goes largely unnoticed by the general populous.
Those living with an invisible disability often require the same types of accommodations as people with visible disabilities but are unable to receive access due to being mistaken as able-bodied, and additionally may be shamed or stigmatized for requesting accommodations.
Chronic illness advocate @katie.bennett.hogg experienced this firsthand when she was scolded by an onlooker for using an accessible parking space.
As @theantoinettethomas says, "It’s a struggle to appear young, 'healthy,' or able-bodied, and have a disability. You can seem selfish, or inconsiderate because there isn’t something visually indicating your disability in order to 'deserve' certain accommodations.”
Thank you for the reminder Katie and Antoinette that we can't assume what someone's abilities are just by looking at them.
