Warning: Graphic Content!! BREAKING NEWS! US PASSES FEDERAL DRIFT GILLNET LEGISLATION. You have won! We have won! Most importantly, the sharks, whales, dolphins, turtles, sea lions and fish have won. Conservation work is a marathon, not a sprint and this has been a marathon of epic proportions. BUT, a win is a win. True conservation work is also a collaboration. We at @sealegacy are so grateful for our partners, @teamsharkwater, @mercyforanimals @turtleislandrestorationnetwork and @theseachangeagency. The battle to end the use of these brutal driftnets that have a 7:1 bycatch ratio has been going on for over 30 years. In 2018, inspired by my friend and conservation hero, the late Rob Stewart, (founder of @teamsharkwater), @SeaLegacy joined the fight. After Rob’s tragic passing, I took his place and dove with @brockleecahill to document the devastation caused by these mile-long nets. @mercyforanimals obtained the most condemning footage of the bycatch wastage and with our partners from @heirstoouroceans, we delivered the video and over 120,000 signatures to the California legislature. The world was shocked. In a mere four months, “Deathnets” had been banned in California. It took another four years, however, for these nets to be banned at the Federal level. A huge shoutout to @sendiannefeinstein, @kamalaharris and @sencapito for their tireless work in bringing this legislation to the federal finish line.
