What do whales and trees have in common? They both sequester carbon.1
cc: @piersonx
1 During the long lives of whales, their bodies absorb an average of up to 33 tons of CO2, and when they pass, this carbon is removed from the atmosphere for centuries. To put this in perspective, the more commonly spoken about carbon sequester, trees, absorb just 48 pounds of CO2 per year. Simply put, one whale is equal to one thousand trees.
With so much work being done to identify the best ways to reduce carbon from the atmosphere, scientists believe that protecting whales could prove to be significantly beneficial to our home planet.
