This photo means a lot to us. It was taken over the weekend at a meditation class my wife hosted, in Al Ula, Saudi Arabia. What struck us over the days we were there, was the diversity of the participants, as well as the practitioners. Talking to locals from Riyadh, of our own age, but more importantly, from younger generations, in their 20s and 30s, they made it abundantly clear that we were witnessing the start of a revolution. The change they had experienced in just the last 3 years was profound. This wellness experience here is still very grass roots but mainly locals attended as they wanted to learn more about holistic wellness for themselves so they can benefit from them. My sense was that the diverse cross section of attendees highlighted a unified hunger to learn more about wellness. There feels like a real sense of hope and ambition, a belief that positive change is underway. I had wonderful conversations with people from in and out of the country, male, female, gay, straight, black, brown, yellow, white, old and young alike. We had people in our group of practitioners from Riyadh, Dubai, Lebanon, Germany, Australia, England, Morocco, Norway, USA, New Zealand, France, Brazil, Azerbaijan, South Africa, and no doubt many more. It felt so good to have a gathering of beautiful people from all over the world, to bring awareness and knowledge of holistic, therapeutic, spiritual and musical practices to the participants. There were classes and dances organized for the construction workers, cleaners, and ground staff too, not just the guests. Everyone was included. I admit I am naive when it comes to cultural and political history, but am also under no pretense that many things about this part of the world are OK, in fact far from it. Saying that, being witness to the birth of change from the ground upwards and being able to share positive practices with the local people has been a profound experience.
