Your child trips on the grass and starts screaming... spills their cup of water and starts crying... or yells "I hate you, go away!" when you try to connect with them during a meltdown.
First of all, nothing is wrong with you. Nothing is wrong with your child. And: you're not "doing it wrong.”
Kids who tend to have out of proportion reactions to small events are what I call Deeply Feeling Kids. They are amazing kids. They are strong, they know how they feel, they aren't swayed by people-pleasing tendencies.
I understand these kids. I have one of these kids. I see adults in my private practice who were these kids. These kids are the most misunderstood children: often labeled "dramatic" or "oppositional"- all frameworks that end up worsening the very dynamics that lead to these kids' struggles in the first place - which is why I truly believe these kids need a different approach.
⭐️ Have a DFK and looking for more support? Cue my Deeply Feeling Kids two-part workshop. So many parents have told me that they were crying within minutes of starting the workshop because of how deeply it resonated, that it is the first time anyone described their child in a way that makes sense, feels right, and the first time they felt hopeful for change. Check out the workshop at goodinside.com.
