We are @DeschlerCanossi and @Zoraida365, co-founders of Women Picturing Revolution. Founded in 2016, @WPR_WomenPicturingRevolution works to expand the framework for understanding history and visual representation through examining the work of woman-identifying lens-based artists who document crises, conflicts, revolution, and joy in private realms and public spaces. Images and text from our forthcoming volume Black Matriliniage, Photography, and Representation: Another Way of Knowing, Edited by Lesly Deschler Canossi and Zoraida Lopez-Diago / Women Picturing Revolution
Leuven University Press / dist. by Cornell University Press in North America, 2022.
Drawing on a wide range of scholarly inquiry and contemporary art, this book addresses misconceptions and fills in the gaps that exist in the photographic representation of Black motherhood, mothering, and mutual care within Black communities.
Adama Delphine Fawundu @adamadelphine is a photographer and visual artist born in Brooklyn of Sierra Leonean descent. She co-founded MFON while co-editing and publishing the book MFON: Women Photographers of the African Diaspora. Her work is highlighted in the curated plates section of Black Matrilineage, Photography, and Representation, Another Way of Knowing. In this volume, her images offer a visual exploration of Black motherhood through pictures made by Black female-identifying photographers. Her images, along with others featured in this volume, begin to fill the gaps of representation of Black mothers and mothering with what Audre Lorde named the erotic or βthe assertion of the lifeforce of women; of that creative energy empowered, the knowledge and use of which we are now reclaiming in our language, our history, our dancing, our loving, our work, our lives.β This act of knowing is often told in the secret language passed between mothers, daughters, kin and defies time.
